Rahul Dravid defends Shubman Gill despite inconsistent play, saying that one cannot always be critical of others.

Rahul Dravid, the coach of India, has supported Shubman Gill despite his dismal performance on the present West Indies tour.

For Gill, the year 2023 has been very significant. Scoring hundreds across each format, including a double hundred in the ODI format, he made a great start to the year. His excellent performance continued through to the IPL 2023 season, where he earned the Orange Cap for collecting the most runs in the competition—a stunning 890 runs in 17 games. His first-choice choice for each of the sport's three forms was solidified by this achievement.

However, during the West Indies trip, Gill's performance unexpectedly dropped. Despite his prior wins, he had trouble establishing herself in the Caribbean. The inexperienced Cheteshwar Pujara was substituted by the youthful hitter in the new position of batting at No. 3. Gill appeared to struggle with the change as he only scored seven runs in the first ODI against the West Indies and just 45 runs in three innings through the Test series.

Gill got a start and scored 34 runs in the second ODI defeat to the West Indies but he was unable to turn it into a big total as the Indian batting order fell apart.

After the defeat, David said he wouldn't be particularly worried about Gill's irregular play. The young hitter was backed by the Indian coach who claimed that players cannot be criticized after each and every game.

Dravid said Gill is an essential part of all three game types for India and raised hope for the rising star game in Trinidad.

Regarding Shubman, I wouldn't worry too much. He's hitting superbly right now. He's doing a great job playing. He looks fantastic. It is possible. You know, you can't constantly blame players after a match. These things are possible. The batting conditions are difficult and challenging. We had to continue and put up a good fight. Probably not during the middle overs. Shubman has been striking well, though. He is an important element in each of the game's three versions for us. He will do well in Trinidad, one can only hope.
